History on Barca's side
FC Barcelona have played host to Real Madrid on twelve
occasions while occupying top spot in the league, winning
ten of those matches. In seven out of the twelve seasons,
Barca went on to lift the league title.
The last time Barca faced Real Madrid at home while
heading the league table was in the 1999-00 season.
The match ended in a 2-2 draw with goals from Rivaldo
and Figo for Barca and a brace for Raul for the visitors.
This was the only draw in these twelve matches and we
have to go way back to 1930 to find the only defeat,
curiously enough the first time that Barca received
Madrid as league leaders.
The remaining ten games have all ended in victories
for Barca, including some outstanding performances such
as 5-0 (1944-45), 4-2 (1951-52) and 3-0 (1997-98 and
1998-99).
Beat Real Madrid and win the league
On the ten occasions that Barca have won in this special
series of matches, the Club went on to win the league
championship seven times and had to accept the runners-up
place three times.
The seven league titles were achieved in the following
seasons:
- 1944-45 (5-0)
- 1951-52 (4-2)
- 1984-85 (3-2)
- 1986-87 (3-2)
- 1990-91 (2-1)
- 1997-98 (3-0)
- 1998-99 (3-0)
The four-point lead
The points difference between the two teams has only
been the same as this year, four points, on one previous
occasion. In the 1984-85 season, FC Barcelona were four
points ahead of fifth placed Real Madrid. Barca won
3-2 thanks to gaols from Gerardo, Migueli and Esteban,
with Sanchís and Butragueño scoring for
Madrid.
